More to sooth

Art

I can't imagine a world minus art as its the one thing throughout time that seems to hold everything together. The world is in a dangerous state so we turn to art to find reasoning, direction and strength. It soothes the mind and soul..

A poem.... Dead Still by Andrei Voznesensky

One of the most beautiful poems ever written... This painting was based on the poem. Reproduction of this painting can only be done with permission from the artist.

Dead Still  by Andrei Voznesensky

Now, with your palms on the blades of my shoulders,
Let us embrace:
Let there be only your lips' breath on my face,
Only, behind our backs, the plunge of rollers.

Our backs, which like two shells in moonlight shine,
Are shut behind us now;
We lie here huddled , listening brow to brow,
Like life's twin formula or double sign.

In folly's world-wide wind
Our shoulders shield from the weather
The calm we now beget together,
Like a flame held between hand and hand.

Does each cell have a soul within it?
If so ,fling open all your little doors,
And all your souls shall flutter like the linnet
In the cages of my pores.

Nothing is hidden that shall not be known.
Yet by no storm of scorn shall we
Be pried from this embrace, and left alone
Like muted shells forgetful of the sea.

Meanwhile, O loaf of stress and bother,
Lie on the shell of our backs in a great heap:
It will but press us closet , one to the other.

We are asleep.

Books...

I'm reading three books . The first one "The Good Book" is indeed a good book. The title is deceiving and as a painter it is the sort of book that inspires thoughts. I pick it ip and read a few pages at a time in any section of the book and it makes me think deeper about life. It's written by writers from Herodotus to Confucius, Baudelaire ,Catullus , and covers all sorts if topics. It is  a very Good Book written in a format that invites one to skip around.                                   The second book, " The Wild Braid" is so well written and thoughtful. American Poet Stanley Kunitz writes about gardening but puts such a magnificent view on the gardens he has nurtured. I would suggest everyone read this even if you don't garden as it tells a wonderful story of a poets thought process.

Lincoln Center, Avery Fisher Hall, Holst's the Planets

I have been waiting to see this particular Conductor do Holst's the Planets. Bramwell Tovey did an amazing job . NASA provided film of the planets which made the experience of sound and site tie in so effortlessly i found my mind painting .    I walked to the train thinking what a wonderful mystery we are. In this huge universe here we are, a lone planet teeming with life, water , love hate, what a wonderful miracle we are. The abstract thought of how this rock we call home provides everything we can need while other planets out there are just that, rocks that are either too hot, too cold , too toxic. I find myself thinking How extraordinary it all is.

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

All which ties into art for me...
